We at Orchards Feed have been made aware of the recent FDA report regarding dilated cardiomyopathy or DCM, which is a disease affecting dogs heart muscles, in connection with “grain free” foods containing peas, lentils, legumes and potatoes. According to the FDA, “It’s important to note that the reports include dogs that have eaten grain-free and grain containing foods and also include vegetarian or vegan formulations. They also include all forms of diets: kibble, canned, raw and home-cooked. Therefore, we do not think these cases can be explained simply by whether or not they contain grains, or by brand or manufacturer.” Where we certainly understand any concerns that our pet parents may have, the FDA has only reported 560 cases of DCM out of the 77 million dogs in the U.S. over the past 5 years and has yet to determine the causes. There has been no scientific evidence as to what is causing a rise in DCM, but we and our manufacturers will continue to work to provide our customers and their pets with the best food possible. If any of our customers still feel concerned, our team would be happy to assist you in finding the right diet for your pet.
